Canadian Investment Regulatory Exam (CIRE) Course™

The entry point to CIRO’s new proficiency model and the required proficiency exam for registration as an Investment Representative (IR). An IR can execute trades for clients, but cannot advise on trades. Advice is permitted under the Registered Representative (RR) category, which requires additional proficiency requirements.

This foundational course builds broad, practical knowledge of Canadian securities regulation, ethical responsibilities, and common industry practices. It establishes the baseline knowledge that new registrants must demonstrate before progressing to more specialized roles.

Previously, individuals typically completed CSI’s Canadian Securities Course® (CSC®) and Conduct and Practices Handbook® (CPH®) to qualify as an IR.

RSE

Retail Securities Exam (RSE) Course™

In combination with CIRE, the RSE is the required proficiency exam for registration as a Registered Representative (RR) for individuals who advise and trade on behalf of retail investors. This course builds on the foundation of CIRE by focusing on client-facing responsibilities. It covers suitability, product knowledge, disclosure requirements, and CIRO’s regulatory expectations for RRs.

Previously, individuals typically completed CSI’s Canadian Securities Course® (CSC®) and the Conduct and Practices Handbook® (CPH®) to qualify as an RR, with the Wealth Management Essentials® (WME®) required as a post-approval requirement within 30 months of approval to maintain the licence.

Institutional Securities Exam (ISE) Course™

Tailored for individuals servicing institutional accounts, this course builds on the foundation of CIRE by emphasizing the unique products, market structures, and regulatory considerations in institutional markets. It prepares candidates to demonstrate competency in trading practices, risk management, and the distinct obligations when dealing with sophisticated clients.

Previously, individuals typically completed CSI’s Canadian Securities Course® (CSC®) and the Conduct and Practices Handbook® (CPH®) to qualify as an RR, with the Wealth Management Essentials® (WME®) required as a post-approval requirement within 30 months of approval to maintain the licence.

Supervisor Exam Course™

The CIRO Supervisor Exam is the required proficiency exam for individuals seeking approval in certain supervisory roles at an Investment Dealer. This course helps candidates prepare for the Supervisor Exam by focusing on the practical responsibilities of supervision, including CIRO’s regulatory framework, supervisory structure, account approvals, account activity reviews, conflicts of interest, complaint handling, advertising and sales communications, business location supervision, and the escalation of supervisory concerns.

Previously, individuals pursuing certain supervisory approvals typically completed CSI’s Investment Dealer Supervisors Course (IDSC). Under CIRO’s new proficiency model, the Supervisor Exam has replaced the IDSC pathway for new supervisory approvals, subject to CIRO’s transition rules for eligible candidates who were already enrolled in prescribed CSI courses before January 1, 2026.

Derivatives Exam Course™ - CIRO

SeeWhy’s new CIRO Derivatives Exam Course™ is expected to launch in August. In the meantime, students can start studying now with SeeWhy’s existing derivatives program for just $359. When the new course becomes available, students will be able to switch into it at no additional cost.

SWL DMTC

SWL Dealer Member Training Course (DMTC)™

Under CIRO’s new proficiency model, Dealer Member Training is a post-approval requirement for newly approved Registered Representatives (RRs) and Investment Representatives (IRs) at Investment Dealer Members. It must be completed within 90 days after approval, and the training must be relevant to the individual’s role, including the types of clients, products, and activities involved.

The SeeWhy Learning Dealer Member Training CourseTM (DMTC) is designed for newly approved Retail RRs and IRs who need to complete Dealer Member Training under CIRO’s new proficiency framework. It is delivered in a streamlined, click-through format designed specifically to support completion of this requirement.

For Investment Dealer Members, SeeWhy Learning can also support firm-specific customization. Training can be adapted to align with your policies, procedures, service model, supervisory expectations, and product offering. Contact us to learn more.

Note: The DMTC is designed to support CIRO’s Dealer Member Training requirement and differs from SeeWhy Learning’s CIRO exam-prep programs. Because this requirement is firm-based and does not involve a separate industry exam, the standard program components listed below are not included.
